City of Scottsburg and MASPark partner with IU Southeast to bring new educational opportunity to local residents.
The City of Scottsburg and Mid-America Science Park (MASPark) have announced a new partnership with Indiana University Southeast that will bring more college courses to MASPark. Local residents will now have an opportunity to take classes in Scottsburg to pursue an associate’s or bachelor’s degree from a four-year, public university.
IU Southeast will begin offering courses in October as part of the fall 2015 semester. Classes being offered include Intro to Microeconomics, Introduction to Psychology II and Intro to Philosophy. Students can register online at www.ius.edu.
Mayor William Graham and IU Southeast Chancellor Ray Wallace began meeting months ago to discuss the possibility of providing courses at MASPark. Chancellor Wallace, Vice Chancellor Uric Dufrene and Mayor Graham finalized the partnership earlier this month.
“One of MASPark’s major focus areas is to provide training and educational opportunities for local residents,” said Mayor Graham. “Scottsburg now has dual-credit options for high school students, employment training and industry recognized certificates in high-demand careers, and thanks to IU Southeast, an opportunity to take university-level courses.”
IU Southeast will expand course offerings as student numbers increase over the next few semesters. Students can take additional courses on the IU Southeast campus to obtain an associate’s, bachelor’s or master’s degree. IU Southeast has degrees and certificates in more than 50 undergraduate and graduate programs.
“It is indeed an important day and special day for IU Southeast when we are able to reach out to such an important community as Scottsburg and help provide university higher education to its citizens. We are honored to work with MASPark leadership in helping make the higher education dreams of Scottsburg residents come true,” Chancellor Wallace said.
“I am so proud of where we are today in Scottsburg,” said Mayor Graham. “We made education a priority in this community, and our hard work is paying off.”
