Access to electrical power for most of us is as simple as the flip of a switch. At home and work, we don’t pay attention to the innovation of electricity—until we lose it due to a storm or other problem. Then, we think about it a lot!
Electrical lineworkers, on the other hand, work behind the scenes everyday to ensure that we experience as few interruptions as possible. Facing physical demands and unpredictable weather conditions, lineworkers must pay close attention to detail and make safety a top priority so that all goes well in our daily routines.
Scott County residents were treated recently to a glimpse into the life of a lineworker during a special event that took place in Scottsburg for the first time, thanks to the City of Scottsburg and Scottsburg Municipal Electric Department.
The Indiana Municipal Electric Association (IMEA) held its fall conference at the Mid-America Science Park in September. The two-and-a-half day event included networking, meetings, receptions and dinners and fishing at Hardy Lake. Approximately 450 people attended.
In conjunction with the conference, IMEA brought its most energizing safety and training event to Scottsburg – the Indiana Lineworkers’ Skills and Training Rodeo. The only one of its kind for public power lineworkers in the state, the Rodeo is designed to showcase the skills and knowledge of lineworkers in a fun and safe environment.
“We were honored to host IMEA in Scottsburg and to recognize the important work of lineworkers in communities across Indiana,” said Mayor Bill Graham. “The Mid-America Science Park was the perfect venue for an event of this magnitude with our conference center and the connection to the technical training we offer at the Park.”
The Rodeo events were judged on safety, work practices, neatness, ability, equipment handling and speed. The event offered lineworkers the opportunity to compete for professional recognition, attend a specialty training course, and practice essential skills in a safe environment. Some participants were also preparing for competition at national and international levels.
The family-friendly event included food, souvenirs, children’s activities, live demonstrations, games and more. IMEA is a statewide trade association representing the issues and concerns of municipally-owned and operated electric utilities since 1941.
