With the school year off to a fresh start, we wanted to take a moment to share some of the exciting things happening at Scott County School District 1 Schools…
- With the technology of the twenty-first century bringing many new and exciting opportunities, school administrators are helping to ensure students are successful today and in the future. Austin Elementary third graders will be receiving iPads to use as a learning tool in the classroom this year as part of the 1:1 initiative.
- The Student Services Council, elected by fourth and fifth grade students, is involved in many events around the community. While the students stay busy, they must also meet certain grade and discipline criteria. They were recently involved in a food drive for the Scott County Clearing House, participated in prevent child abuse awareness month activities, and met with Superintendent Anderson to discuss new ideas for the school and numerous activities around campus.

- The Scott County Kiwanis Club sponsors the BUG program to provide motivation for third grade students to work hard academically and do well in school. The program offers incentives to students who increase scores from one grading period to the next.
- Each year, Scott County School District 1 celebrates Career Day to help children learn about new career possibilities. Each year they have approximately 100 parents and community volunteers visit with students to speak about their current careers and give examples of how education has helped them succeed. The students enjoy this special event, and the schools are very thankful to local business owners who allow their employees to participate and to the dedicated parents who take time off to visit the schools.
- Austin Middle School is proud to provide students with many opportunities for lifelong learning and community involvement. There are three AMS Book Clubs, Academic & Spell Bowl teams and an opportunity to join the Austin Middle School Student Council.
- AMS also supports many organizations, including a canned food drive for the Scott County Clearinghouse, a “change war” for donations for the We Care & Kids First Auction, a “Say Boo to Breast Cancer Day” at Halloween to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Association, and a “Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree Day” for the American Diabetes Association.
- Austin High School students now have an opportunity to take introductory welding and advanced manufacturing dual credit courses through Ivy Tech at the Mid-America Science Park. This is the first dual credit program with an industry-recognized certification.
- Thanks to an extensive dual credit program, there are 34 Early College Juniors (20 Austin, 14 Crothersville) and 29 Seniors (21 Austin, 8 Crothersville) this year. All but three seniors will graduate with an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Studies from Ivy Tech Sellersburg and have an opportunity to participate in Ivy Tech’s graduation.
Scott County School District 1 strives to reflect the spirit of the community. They are proud to not only provide their students with the academics necessary for their educational growth, but to also instill in them the belief that giving back to others will make them better and more productive citizens.
