The Adult Education services in Region 10 are managed locally by the Scott County Economic Development Corporation, the fiscal agent for the Adult Education region which includes Clark, Crawford, Floyd, Harrison, Scott and Washington counties. The Adult Education program receives state and federal funding, based on previous performance and attendance. In the program year 2015-2016, July 1 through June 20, 2016, Region 10 received $1,125,528. Those funds are used to pay instructors and staff, purchase equipment and materials (both paper and digital online software), and deliver professional development opportunities to the staff.
The components of the Adult Education program are foundational skills development, occupational bridge program training, academic and career counseling, and related initiatives to assist adults and out-of-school youth. The goals of the system are leveraging all available resources toward increasing the capacity of adult education; increasing accessibility to adult education services; meeting and exceeding learner performance goals; creating a seamless transition to postsecondary education and employment; and building an educated and competitive workforce.
Twenty-five free classes are offered in 18 different locations in the region. Classes are designed to assist people in obtaining the High School Equivalency Diploma (HSE), learning college and career-readiness skills, successfully passing Accuplacer for entrance into Ivy Tech, taking career assessments and receiving career counseling, and learning the English language. The Adult Education Consortium is an advisory board, consisting of business, education, and community partners who can cross-refer clients into other services to remove barriers so that students and clients can make progress with their academic and employment goals.
Some people may think Adult Education is still the program to help people who dropped out of school come back and obtain a High School Equivalency Diploma. But now more than ever, Adult Education is the transition piece to take people from anyplace on their path to the next level of success.
